Auckland: Your Council. Your Vote

General News | 08/10/2010

A 16-page guide to the new Auckland Council and how to vote in the upcoming elections is being distributed to Aucklanders this week.

The publication – Auckland: Your Council. Your Vote – will be delivered to households across the new Auckland Council area, from Rodney in the north to Franklin in the south. Copies will also be available in libraries and other council buildings.

Published by the Auckland Transition Agency (ATA) and including some content from the Electoral Officer, the publication explains how the new Auckland Council will work and how Aucklanders can have a say in who governs Auckland and their community.

It includes information on:

  • An elections timetable, how to vote and details for potential candidates
  • The role of the mayor and councillors on the governing body
  • The role and responsibilities of the 21 local boards
  • Council-controlled organisations and what they are responsible for
  • District Health Board and Licensing Trust elections
  • The independent board representing Maori, the Pacific peoples and ethnic peoples advisory panels
  • Where and how to find more information about the new council
  • Service centre locations and a guide to new regulatory fees, charges and forms.

The newspaper also has a map showing the 13 wards and 21 local boards that will make up the Auckland Council.

The local elections will be held by postal vote from 17 September until midday Saturday 9 October. You can check if you are enrolled to vote at www.elections.org.nz.
